Van Gaal: Di Maria can do better for United
Despite the 26-year-old's impressive Old Trafford debut and opening goal against QPR, the Dutchman believes the winger could have been more effective in possession
Louis van Gaal insists Angel Di Maria "can do better" despite the Argentine's influential display in Manchester United’s 4-0 win over QPR on Sunday.
The €75 million summer signing from Real Madrid scored a free kick on his Old Trafford debut and set up Juan Mata for United's fourth goal in the 58th minute.
Di Maria also played a pivotal role in a number of United's attacks before he was brought off with eight minutes remaining, but Van Gaal believes the 26-year-old could have been better in possession.
"When you make three goals and score the first yourself then you cannot play badly," the Dutchman told reporters.
"But he had a lot of unnecessary losses [of possession], so he can do better.
"It's nearly impossible to do better when you score one goal and help make three others, but I'm analysing the game and I see things we can improve on."
