Barcelona captain Xavi hailed Lionel Messi as “the best” after another memorable night for the Argentine in Amsterdam. Messi scored twice in a 2-0 Barca win against Ajax to equal Raul’s record of 71 Champions League goals. It also meant Luis Enrique’s side made sure of progression from Group F. Xavi told Canal Plus: “Leo has freedom on the pitch, as do all three attackers, but here we have to work together and when we do everything works. “I’m happy for Leo and the work he does in the team. He’s the number one, the best.” Barca went into the game on the back of successive La Liga defeats to Real Madrid and Celta Vigo and with some supporters questioning the methods of coach Luis Enrique. Xavi felt the win, and performance, at the ArenA was the perfect riposte. “We needed the victory. We have suffered playing far away from home but it’s a good win and it will give us confidence,” he added. “If you lose a match you don’t have to change the style. When we lose we have to keep going. The style with Luis Enrique is the same as it was at the beginning of the season.” Watch Ajax 0-2 Barcelona Highlights
