Brazil advanced to the second round of the World Cup and a meeting with either Colombia or Uruguay after seeing off Chile 3-2 on penalties in Belo Horizonte. The teams were deadlocked at 1-1 after extra time after Alexis Sanchez cancelled out David Luiz’s opener for Brazil. And with Brazil leading 3-2 on penalties, Gonzalo Jara hit Chile’s final spot kick against the post to send the hosts through. A highly controversial decision from English referee Howard Webb ruled out a Hulk goal for use of the arm and Chile almost won it at the death but substitute Mauricio Pinilla saw his shot cannon back of the bar with Julio Cesar well beaten. The lottery of the penalty shoot-out saw further drama as Julio Cesar saved from Mauricio Pinilla and Alexis Sanchez whilst Willian and Hulk did likewise for Brazil. But with the shoot-out set for sudden death, Jara’s miss means that Brazil qualify for the World Cup quarter-finals for the sixth consecutive time. Brazil 1-1 Chile Watch All Goals
